Kevin A. Phillips possesses the best short-range explosion of any linebacker in the 2018 class. His last few steps before contact are a blur, but not for ball carriers. Most of them are laying flat on their backs wondering where the freight train went that just hit them. He is thickly-built with the solid frame you want in a linebacker who is going to be dishing out a lot of punishment. Utilizes his long arms to make strong, impressive drag down tackles from the backside. An instinctive and fast-twitched linebacker who consistently plays downhill, and slips under blockers with his quick feet. Flashes great change-of-direction skill between the tackles. He can quickly plant, pivot and explode laterally in any direction when sifting through the wash. Possesses the speed and reactive athleticism to hit the run seam inside/out, and he pursues ball carriers like a heat-seeking missile once he zeroes in. Shows a great burst and closing speed chasing plays down off-tackle. Displays fluid hips and quickness in his turns when dropping in zone coverage; possesses good ball skills. Demonstrates the speed and burst to hit the run seam inside-out making plays behind the line of scrimmage. Uses deceptive agility and fast-twitched athleticism to slip under would-be blockers and consistently find direct downhill run lanes. His skills may be best suited in the short and long-range at the next level coaches he can do it all. He is very consistent with his read and reaction skills, particularly on plays run. Flashes the raw potential to be a playmaker on defense and make teams account for him in their game plan. These qualities should find a role for him early in college days.
